Wherwell v's Dinton

23/08/2008

'Wherwell finishing strong'

Having won their last 3 games Wherwell went to Dinton more in hope than expectation but came away with the points in a tight nerve tingling game.
Stuart Norridge finally won the toss and elected to bat on a soft wicket. Wherwell lost Colin Hitchings in the 2nd over when he was well run out, Ian Whyton (11) joined Dave Langford (29) and they struggled to come to terms with acurate bowling backed up by sharp fielding. Wickets fell with regularity owing much to poor shot selection and imapteints on a pitch where the only ball to come through at a good height was a full toss. Despite a good run rate wherwell's lower order were again batting inside the first 20 overs. Paul Whyton (52) came in at 7 to join Nathan Young (16) and attempted to re-establish some control, Young batting with his usual confidence looked set for a big score until he drove at a ball that stopped in the pitch and ended up in the hands of short mid-off. this brought Mark Pettman (16) to the crease and as they have often this season in tandem with Whyton they set about the Dinton bowlers punishing anything with width and defending anything straight. Having batted for what seemed an age Pettman and Whyton fell in quick succession and a late flurry from Scott Blackmore (10) saw Wherwell to a repsectable 160 all out.
the Dinton innings never looked like getting close to the target as they were reduced to 58 for 8 by a magnificent spell of controlled bowling by Young (12-23-5) and Pettman (12-62-3), however Dinton are not a team to go down lightly as their current league posistion shows, the 9 and 10 batsmen dug deep and got into the wherwell change bowlers, runs started to come steadily and soon Wherwell were looking for inspiration as the target got to 22 from 9 overs. Inspiration came from the veteran arm of Colin Hitchings who removed the established batsman caught well by young at long on and then followed up in his next over by clean bowling the Dinton number 11 to give Wherwell a deserved, if hard fought, 16 run victory.

Wherwell v's SouthWilts IV

26/08/2008

Wherwell back in action

After a fortnight dogged by rain Wherwell were happy to be back in action against a South Wilts side sitting 1 place below them. Having lost the toss and been asked to bat Stuart Norridge again shuffled his pack and asked Dave Langford (61) to partner the evergreen Colin Hitchings (28) at the top of the innings. Although they threatened to accelerate many times tight bowling from (insert names and figures here) kept them in check and frustration and conditions claimed Langford swinging across the line of ball that barely got above ankle height. Cameos from Jez Holman (17 ), Nathan Young (11 ) and Paul Whyton (17) got the home side to a score of 156 for 9 which it was agreed over scones and cream was a par score for the wicket.
With full stomachs and a purposeful stride Wherwell attacked from the first ball in the field, Nathan Young ( 9 overs 31 runs 4 wickets) 'mixed it up' and was assisted by his own stunning 'catch it or die' caught and bowled and a wonderful reflex catch from Nigel Horne. Mark Pettman bowled with his usual control and aggression and eventually got his rewards of (12overs 24runs 3wickets), three fine catches and a run-out from the skipper (jug worthy!) showed good support and his decision to bring Ryan Young into the attack gave Wherwell an early finish as he took the last 2 wickets with the last 2 balls of his 1st over, to leave South Wilts IV 78 all out from only 26 overs.

Sid Rowles Memorial Match

03/08/07

On a overcast cold and wet day Wherwell fought through the pain to play the Sid Rowles memorial match. The teams were picked, primed and ready to go for a 11.30 start. The first innings saw Dave Langford's team post a huge 149-4 off 20 overs, a score that would be very hard to chase to down. N.Young (30 not out) did the  damage with the bat whilst I.Whyton picked up the in form spackman for 7 runs with a great caught and bowled. But catch of the day has to go Mark Pettman who full stretch one handed catch took Dave Langford down. In reply Paul Whyton's team got off to a flyer but could never keep up with the run rate and finished on 101-6... After a quick drink the teams went back out for there second innings, Both teams having to reverse the order, A fine spell from Pettman and Jakeman held Langfords team back, with just 12 runs coming off the first 5 overs, until N.Rowles got his team up and running scoring 25 before having to retire. Whyton's team continued to apply the pressure until Nathan Young came to the crease again hitting a happy Jez Holman for 18 off one over, Young went on to retire in the next over, some good batting in the last few overs saw them to 152, leaving the whyton's needing 199 from 20 overs to win. Paul Whyton and Mark Pettman hit the ball to all corners of the ground scoring at a rate quicker than the speed of light. Some steady batting from R.Daubney and L.Whyton got them close but the weather took it's toll and players were thinking about the drink rather than the cricket. Langford's team closed the game up when Holman went for a second ball duck. Batsman of the Day went to Nathan Young, Bowler of the day was Luke Trebbert, Fielder of the day went to Jack Whiteside and Player of the Day went, to Nathan Young.

A great day was had by all and money was raised for the playing fields,

thank you to everyone who helped make it a great day.

Wherwell vs Hungerford

With the return of summer came also the return of some consistency to the Wherwell batting order. On a hot day Hungerford won the toss and to the home sides suprise and releif elected to field first. James Spackman (28), promoted to open the innings, and Colin Hitchings (10) made a solid start tkaing the score to 40 of 12 before Spackman fell attempting to hit the the steady Hungerford bowling into Chilbolton. This bought the inform Jez Holman to the crease who picked up from where he left the previous week, his breezy 48 was the cornerstone of the Wherwell final 175 for 6, however it was left to the lower order to add the extra impetus with Skipper Stuart Norridge (28) and Vice skipper Paul whyton (25) both enjoying the summer sun.

After tea it was the turn of the bowlers to show unity. Nathan Young and Mark Pettman (12 overs unchanged 1 for 44) had the Hungerford openers hopping around the crease and it wasn't long before the first wicket came with Young being rewarded for consistency Dave Langford taking the catch at cover. Hungerford were always in the game and a fine 55 from A.Burbage, on the back of his earlier 9 overs 2 for 42, kept the game on track for a tight finish. Scott Blackmore turned the game Wherwells way, first showing his growing maturity when Burbage drove on the up Blackmore took a fine catch at cover but as his team mates congratulated him and the batsman headed for the pavilion Scott recalled him saying the ball had been grounded, He was then introduced into the attack and bowled a good line which was rewarded with the prize wicket of Burbage caught by Norridge.

Norridge (7-0-33-3) brought himself into the attack and wickets fell reguarly with a mixture of good bowling, fielding and poor judgmant from the batsmen seeing wherwell home by just 6 runs.

Longparish 2nd v Wherwell

Saturday 28/06/08

Captain Stuart Norridge took his team the whole 2 miles across the A303 to Longparish with confidence high, following a convincing win the previous weekend. After winning the toss he elected to bat, a decision that probably decided the game. An opening stand of 74 between Colin Hitchings (35) and Craig Beckingham (81 n.o) set the tone for Wherwell and when in form Dave Langford (78) joined Beckingham at the crease the run rate soared. Their 100+ partnership was broken with only a few overs remaining when Langford attempted a shot too many. After losing another two wickets Wherwell managed to make a solid 248-4 with Beckingham carrying his bat through the innings.

Longparish started their innings on the required run rate and left Wherwell slightly concerned. However, some good tactical bowling changes by skipper Norridge ensured Wherwell remained on target. Nathan Young was probably the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-34, whilst his brother Ryan managed 4-50 with his leg breaks. Smart glove-work from keeper Andy McGlashan (2 stumpings, 2 catches) also helped in getting Longparish all out for 162, giving Wherwell a win and the bit of breathing space above the relegation zone that comes with it.

Presidents XI Re-claim ashes

Sunday 29/06/08

Wherwell took to the field on Sunday for their Annual Presidents XI match which is played for the ashes of the stumps from the first game over 50 years ago.

A day marked for the enjoyment of the game and to raise money for The Countess Of Brecknock Hospice, the founder having donated the land for the cricket club some years ago.

The day started well and saw the presidents XI making a healthy run total in 25 over that the Wherwell side could only look towards as wickets fell too readily in their innings.

After which another game of 20 overs was played giving Wherwell XI a chance to redeem themselves, which they did with controversial style.

In the end the Presidents XI claimed the ashes with a huge run rate victory over both innings, the day was enjoyed by all including a debut from a few of Wherwell's budding youth team players who showed brilliant prospect for the future.

On the day the projected funds raised for this worthy cause was estimated to have reach around £1100 and counting

A big thank you to all those who helped raise money.

22/06/08

Friendly

Wherwell were up against Bournemouth Hopefuls at home a late arranged fixture,. Having won the toss Wherwell elected to bat first and started scoring at what they thought was a slow 3 a over, but then Dave "Bonnie" Langford (61) stepped up to the plate and smashed the ball to all corners of the park, helping Wherwell reach 215-5.
After a great tea the Hopefuls never really got going, scoring a steady less than 2 a over and where 45-2 off 30 overs, until Wherwell Skipper Nigel Horne decided to give everyone a bowl and conceding some what can only be described as comical runs. After what felt like a lifetime in the field the 40 overs final came to a end with the Hopefuls finishing on 110-4 off 40 overs continuing Wherwell unbeaten Sunday run

Wherwell Vs Portway

01/06/08

Friendly

In a fixture that goes back more years then anyone can remember Wherwell were up against Portway at home, and this year the Job of captain fell to Nathan Young. Having won the toss Wherwell elected to bat first and started well with an opening partnership of 120 between Dave "Bonnie" Langford (78), and Saturday Vice Skipper Paul Whyton (66). But, when the partnership was broken the good batting and the luck continued to go Wherwell's way with new signing Darren "Bear" Trebert leaving the crease with a personal best of 25, leaving Wherwell on 224 for 6.

After tea Portway responded well with an opening partnership of 110, only broken af the 23 over mark by Skipper Nathan Young, which left the game well balanced. Wherwell threw everything they had at Portway's middle order but they refused to collapse, and finally Wherwelll's best bowler immerged as Jack "Lucky Jack" Whiteside on 3 for 36.

Even as the Portway's wickets fell they managed to keep up with the run rate all the way until the final few overs, with Portway ending up on a total of 180 with 4 wickets to spare.

Wherwell V Longford Park

31/05/08

League

Wherwell were again on the road this time away to a very picturesque Longford Park. Wherwell lost the toss and were asked to bat on a wicket that was soft. Yet again Wherwell top order failed to score hardly any runs between them and being in a very cautious position at 18-4, Wherwell needed a partnership.

This brought James Spackman 55 and Colin Hitchings 13 to the crease and the 2 of them had a partnership of 70 to bring Wherwell back in to the game, Wherwell lower order helping them up to 145 all-out. After tea Longford Park came out looking to knock of the runs and after getting off to a flyer, Nathan Young spell of 12 overs in the middle overs brought the run rate back down and Wherwell were in with a chance of defending the total, but it wasn’t to be and Longford Park chased the total down for only the loss of 3 wickets, but with only 2 overs to spare.

Wherwell v Colden Common

25/05/08

Friendly

Wherwell travelled to Colden Common in hope on building on the previous win the week before. Losing the toss Wherwell were asked to field first in a shortened game of 30 overs per side. Wherwell kept it tight and restricted Colden Common to 169-7 off 30 overs. After tea Wherwell need a good start to chase down the runs, Charlie McEwen providing the early impetus with a quickfire 42 also being helped by Nathan Young 46 and with Mark Pettman 29* towards the end of the innings helped Wherwell chase down the score with 4 balls left.

Wherwell V St Mary Bourne

24/05/08

League

Wherwell travelled to St Mary Bourne on the back of a good win from the week before, they knew before hand it would be a tough game as St Mary Bourne were setting the pace as league leaders before the game. Wherwell won the toss and chose to field first. Wherwell did pick up wickets but came at a cost of a few runs. Mark Pettman with a very tidy opening spell of 12-3-32-1 and Craig Beckingham again picking up 4 wickets but at a cost of a very expensive 73 runs in 12 overs. J.Riley top scoring for St Mary Bourne with 60. St Mary Bourne posting 226-8 of 42 overs. After tea Wherwell were after a strong start but this failed and wickets were being lost far too easily, James Spackman top scoring with 27 after that Wherwell were all out for 96 and St Mary Bourne proved why they were setting the pace at the top.

Wherwell V Chute

18/05/08

Friendly

Starting with only 10 men Wherwell were put out to field on a hard dry pitch. They started off well picking up wickets, but a cultured innings from PGA Pro Charlie Gold 61(retired hurt) held them together along with some solid lower order batting took them on to 180-9 off 40 overs.

After tea Wherwell responded poorly being 20-3. The confidence of the Chute side was short lived however, as James Spackman (No.4) and Nathan Young (No.5) both batted with cool determination and crafted a partnership of 140 before James was caught for 46. However, Nathan continued carrying the team home, to finish with a six making his first ever century and winning the match in the same ball, a superb 103no saw Wherwell make their target with 12 overs to spare.

Wherwell v Amesbury

17/05/08

League

Reeling from a disappointing loss last week that left them at the bottom of the league table, Wherwell were put into bat by an Amesbury side that were previously Top of the table. Opening bat Jez Holman held the innings together with a well constructed 54 but other wickets fell at regular intervals, in what started as a seriously competitive game.

Wherwell's hopes of a defendable total looked as bleak as the gathering clouds however, the tail wagged as on form No.9 Scott Blackmore (23no) and No.11 Richard Rowles (10no), added much needed runs in the last few overs to give Wherwell an additional batting point from the full 42 overs and lifting Wherwell to 158-9.

After tea Wherwell looked as if they meant business and started well with a run out in the first over. Wickets began to fall as Wherwell's depth of bowling really showed, and was backed by good fielding.

Amesbury, with their middle order putting up a stubborn but forlorn fight, were bowled out for a just 85. Of Wherwell's bowlers pick of the bowling was Mark Pettman 10-6-21-3 and Craig Beckingham 8.5-1-28-4.
